Big Society is Watching You!

More from the London Transport Museum; this delightfully retro poster hails from 2002, when following the 9/11 tragedy, the Gov thought it would comfort the average Brit by reminding them that CCTV CAMERAS ARE EVERYWHERE!!! Needless to say, the average Brit still remembers Orwell and 1984, and the poster did not go down well, to put it mildly. Lovely design, though. They’ve even got the poster on a t-shirt (had to buy it, of course).

  1. That is one scary poster, even if it is strangely beautiful. Did it really cause a controversy in the UK when it came out?

  2. J P Catton says:

I think it did in the blogosphere. Not sure how big it was in the newspapers, I wasn’t living in the UK at the time.

  3. I’ve been trying to post a link to one of the other examples of artwork on the LT Museum site but it’s not working. Whatever the poster is called ‘POWER’ and its in the 1930s section. Would you say that’s futurism? Vorticism? Constructivism? (Don’t know if there really is a school of art called Constructivism but anyway it’s those old USSR posters and statues I’m thinking about.

  4. J P Catton says:

Whoa. Yeah just had a look at that poster. There is a form of art called Constructivism but I think you mean Suprematism, that form of Russian Soviet Futurism pioneered by Malkovitch or whatever his name was.

  5. badmix88 says:

That wasn’t suprematism, because suprematism was the movement that used basic geometric forms as its inspiration, such as the famous ‘Red Square’ and ‘Black Square’. And his name wasn’t Malkovitch it was Malevich.

  6. PacificForce says:

Big Society, yeah, right. Public spending cut by $131 billion over 4 years, “Special” Constables, librarians, museum officials, park rangers, maintenance workers being forced to work for no pay. Thanks Cameron you c***

  7. J P Catton says:

So what is Constructivism? Is it really what those Soviet propaganda posters with their heroic poses and square jaws were all about?
